Top: Using of Virtual Machine
Free trail VHD can be download @
technet. It gives limited type of Operating system.
I will be using MSDNAA instead, as i can download full version provided by SP.
How to create a virtual machine:
- Click "File"
- Click "New"
- Click "Virtual Machine"
- Click "Typical"
- Input your necessary information, depend on what you are using it for
- Virtual machine will appear at your left side in the "Favorites".
How to install the operating system:
- Click your virtual machine located at your left hand side.
- Click "Edit virtual machine settings"
- Click "CD/DVD"
- Use ISO image file, then browse it to your iso image.
- Power on the virtual machine, and it will start installing like a normal computer.
In this pratical instead of using Virtual PC, i will be using VMware instead. VMware is a virtual machine which partially simulates enough hardware to run the guest OS. As VMware is already learned in my other modules, i already have the fundamentals knowledge of how it works. VMware is used for many purpose, it can be used for studies so that it can be reinstall when error occurs. VMware is also used to load mulitple OS which is called "Virtualization". Virtualization can be used for computer or servers to load multiple OS in a PC itself.
The advantages of using virtualization can save both space and cost. Virtualization can be used for migration which helps process to be transfered to another computer, the reason doing so is because that process requires more hardware resources. It can also be migrated over to another server, if the previous server needs to reboot or the administrators wants to configure something in that server. Doing this will prevent user process not to be terminated.
The disadvantages is that existing security tool is design for physical server which do not adapt well to virtual machine. Virtual machine not only need to protect from outside, but also from the other virtual machine located in the computer itself.
